Climate
Your Perfect Timing
As a guide, choosing the right season is one of the most important things I discuss with my guests. The weather not only affects the views and trail conditions during trekking but also wildlife sightings in the jungle or the atmosphere during cultural tours.
From Monsoon to Dream Weather: An Overview of the Seasons
In Nepal, we mainly distinguish four seasons, which are shaped by the monsoon. The summer monsoon from the Bay of Bengal brings most of the rain from June to September. Let's take a closer look at the individual phases:
Spring (March - May)
- Weather: Temperatures rise, days get longer. It becomes pleasantly warm, even at medium altitudes. In higher regions, it's still cool but mostly sunny. Occasional afternoon showers are possible but usually short. The air can sometimes be a bit hazy, especially in late spring.
- Highlights:
- Nature's Awakening: Everything blooms! Especially the vast rhododendron forests transform entire mountain slopes into a sea of colors (especially April).
- Good Trekking Conditions: Passes are mostly snow-free, temperatures are pleasant.
- Wildlife Spotting: In the Terai, the hot season begins, animals are more likely to come to waterholes.
- My Tip: Ideal for most trekking tours, especially if you want to experience the magnificent blooms. Also very pleasant for cultural tours.

Summer / Monsoon (June - September)
- Weather: Hot, humid, and rainy. The monsoon often brings heavy, prolonged rainfall, especially in the afternoons and at night. Humidity is high. In higher altitudes, it's cooler but often overcast.
- Challenges:
- Trekking: Many trails become muddy and slippery. Leeches are more common. Mountain views are often blocked by clouds. Rivers can swell, bridges may be damaged.
- Transport: Roads can be blocked by landslides, domestic flights often have delays or are canceled.
- Advantages & Opportunities:
- "Rain Shadow" Areas: Regions north of the main Himalayan range (e.g., Mustang, Dolpo) receive significantly less rain and are particularly good to visit now!
- Green Landscapes: Nature is incredibly lush and verdant green.
- Fewer Tourists: Away from the rain shadow areas, it's noticeably quieter.
- Rice Cultivation: You can watch farmers at work in the vibrant green rice terraces.
- My Tip: Recommended only for experienced travelers or special tours to the rain shadow areas. Flexibility is key here!

Autumn (October - November)
- Weather: This is the peak season! The monsoon recedes, the sky clears up. Mostly stable weather conditions with plenty of sunshine, pleasant daytime temperatures, and cool nights. The air is often crystal clear.
- Highlights:
- Best Mountain Views: The views of the snow-capped peaks are often breathtakingly clear and expansive.
- Ideal Trekking Conditions: Dry trails, pleasant temperatures.
- Important Festivals: The biggest Nepalese festivals, Dashain (usually October) and Tihar (usually November), fall during this time. A great cultural experience!
- Pleasant for all activities: Perfect for trekking, cultural tours, and also wildlife spotting in the Terai.
- My Tip: The most popular time to visit – for good reason! Booking early is advisable here, for flights as well as accommodation and guides.

Winter (December - February)
- Weather: Cool to cold, especially at night and at higher altitudes. Often sunny and clear during the day, but the days are short. Snow often lies in areas above 3,500 - 4,000 meters, high passes can be impassable. In the Kathmandu Valley and Pokhara, it's mostly mild during the day, but cool in the mornings and evenings. In the Terai, it's pleasantly mild.
- Opportunities:
- Trekking at lower altitudes: Tours in the Annapurna foothills, Helambu, or around the Kathmandu Valley are quite feasible.
- Cultural Tours: Perfect for sightseeing in the Kathmandu Valley or Pokhara, as it's less crowded.
- Wildlife Spotting in the Terai: Ideal time for Chitwan or Bardia, as the vegetation is less dense and temperatures are pleasant.
- Limitations:
- High-alpine treks (e.g., Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit via Thorong La) are very demanding or partly not possible/safe.
- My Tip: A good time for cultural and nature experiences in the south and midlands if you don't mind the cold and don't necessarily want to go to the highest mountains. Often very clear air!
